L'impermanenza - cioè il fatto che tutto cambia costantemente - è l'insegnamento fondamentale della vita, forse quello più carico di conseguenze. Intuitivamente lo capiamo da soli. Qualunque cosa osserviamo, ci rendiamo conto che la sua caratteristica fondamentale è quella del cambiamento. La nostra stessa esistenza è l'intero segno del cambiamento, con il passaggio dall'infanzia alla giovinezza, quindi all'età adulta, alla vecchiaia e alla morte. Per quanto ci proviamo, non possiamo in alcun modo contrastare il continuo invecchiamento del corpo. L'impermanenza è ovunque e tutti i livelli, dal microscopico al cosmico. Non c'è nulla che rimanga immobile nel tempo. Osservare la realtà con un microscopio, verificando come tutto ciò che ci circonda, incluso noi, è impostato muovendo continuamente atomi e particelle subatomiche. Persino oggetti metallici, che sembrano così solidi! Inoltre, è stato calcolato che nel corpo umano ci sono in media quasi 40 mila miliardi di cellule, che viene costantemente rinnovato. Si stima che 300 milioni di cellule muoiano e rinascano ogni minuto nei nostri corpi. Si scopre che, nel giro di pochi anni, non rimane quasi nulla di noi, anche se continuiamo a credere di essere sempre la stessa persona! Eppure l'universo intenso, lo sappiamo, è in continua espansione e dei suoi infiniti elementi non ce n'è uno che rimanga fermo. Ma gli artisti con il loro lavoro cercano di lasciare qualcosa di se stessi al mondo, gli artisti cercano l'eternità.

Impermanence - that is, the fact that everything changes constantly - is the fundamental teaching of life, perhaps the one most laden with consequences. Intuitively we understand it for ourselves. Whatever we observe, we realize its fundamental characteristic is that of change. Our very existence is the whole sign of change, with the passage from childhood to youth, then to adulthood, old age and death. As much as we try, we cannot in any way counteract the continuous ageing of the body.
Impermanence is everywhere and all levels, from the microscopic to the cosmic. There is nothing that remains immobile over time. Observing reality with a microscope, verifying how everything that surrounds us, including us, is set by continuously moving atoms and subatomic particles. Even metal objects, which seems so solid! Also, it has been calculated that in the human body there are on average almost 40 thousand billion cells, which is constantly renewed. It is estimated that 300 million cells die and reborn every minute in our bodies. It turns out that, within a few years, almost nothing remains of us, although we continue to believe we are always the same person! And yet the intense universe, we know, is constantly expanding and of its infinite elements, there is not one that remains still.
But the artists with their artworks try to leave something of themself to the world, the artists seek eternity.
